ANCHORED TRAWLER ALMOST SINKS IN SEVERE STORM AFTER COLLIDING WITH ROCKS

The fishing trawler Sriwichian 8 breaks anchor link in severe storm crashing into rocks off the island of Jarn. Five crew members abandoned ship for the nearby island and where later rescued by a Navy Patrol vessel.

Samesarn Bay, 8th of November 2009 (PDN): The fishing boat Sriwichian 8 was exposed to a severe freak storm that occurred over the Samesarn bay at approximately 8:00am on Sunday morning. The trawler was anchored by the captain off the coast of the Island of Jarn where it was decided they would await the passing of the storm. Due to the extreme conditions - namely the high winds - the boats anchor link broke free when a large wave crashed into the side of the vessel and pushed it up onto dangerous rocks damaging the hull significantly in several places.

During the events Navy Captain Natthaphong Parnsaphorn received a radio transmission from Mr Pirom Wornkhaonoi the driver of the Sriwichian 8 fishing boat informing him that the trawler had broken free from anchor and had crashed upon rocks out off the Coast of Jarn Island. Mr Pirom Wornkhaonoi also mentioned that the five crew (including himself), would soon abandon ship for the island where they would await rescue. Navy Captain Natthaphong Parnsaphorn quickly radioed back to Navy Lieautenant General Khanat Thongpool, Director General of Navy Sector 1 of the Sattahip Region informing him of the events and requesting further instruction.
